Louden Nelson Book Lecture Series
Press
Release October 30, 2003

On Wednesday,
November 19th, at 7pm there will be a lecture on Louden Nelson
at the Children's Learning Museum (CLM)
of Santa Cruz. The evening will include a reception marking the first
in a long series of speaking engagements by the museum throughout Santa
Cruz County. Franklin Marshall, the founder and director of the Children's
Learning Museum, will give a multimedia presentation on the life story
of Louden Nelson. Marshall will share a host of wonderful treasures
from the past including stories, pictures, tools and artifacts from
the mid-1800s, and an educational kit the CLM is using to educate children
on this historic subject matter.
The lecture is also
part of a fundraiser for the museum. In June the Children's Learning
Museum published a children's book about the life story of Louden Nelson
titled Louden Nelson: From Slavery to Philanthropy. At that time, the
publication of the book was used to help with the Measure B campaign
to save the schools. Now the museum intends to increase their use of
the book as a funding resource. In April 2004 the museum will embark
on the Louden Nelson Cross Country Tour to promote the Louden Nelson
book. The tour from North Carolina to Northern California will provide
additional information on Louden Nelson and his master's journey and
build the foundation for the development of a documentary and museum
exhibit based on this educational story.
