CLM Academy of Art and Technology Press Release
October 30, 2003
On Saturday,
October 18th the Children's Learning Museum of Santa Cruz launched
their Academy of Art and Technology. The occasion was marked with a
decorating party open to the community for free. Children and adults
learned the fine art of paper folding and created beautiful decorative
origami and colorful origami mobiles that decorate the museum. The celebration
concluded with a free pizza luncheon and more paper folding. The academy
was developed to provide a range of art and technology classes for children,
youth, adults, and families. Currently, the academy has two art instructors,
Brooke Christopher and Victoria Andrea Doria, and one computer instructor,
and Dr. Abigail Joseph.
Brooke Christopher
is a watercolorist who graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Art from
UC Santa Cruz. She has exhibited her art locally, worked as a substitute
teacher for many years, and has taught arts and crafts at a variety
of after-school programs. Ms. Christopher is currently teaching a series
of arts and crafts classes at the Children's Learning Museum on Saturday
mornings and wants to help everyone involved develop their artistic
ability.
Victoria Andrea
Doria has studied art all over the world. From New York City to Italy
she has taught classes to children and adults creating murals and variety
of art. She has exhibited her work at festivals and galleries all over
the country. Ms. Doria works in a variety of media including: oil, watercolor,
acrylic, silk painting, and sculpture. Her hope is to open young hearts
to artistic expression. In January Ms. Doria will be painting a mural
in Watsonville through the city's Parks and Recreation.
Dr. Abigail Joseph
is a computer scientist, dancer, and artist. With a Bachelor of Science
and Engineering degree in Computer Science from Princeton University
and a Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from UC
Santa Cruz, Dr. Joseph is devoted to sharing her love for science and
art with youth. She is eager to develop the logical and analytical skill
sets of youth and adults in a fun setting that incorporates her love
of art. Dr. Joseph brings to the academy a variety of industry experience
from prestigious technology research organizations, such as AT&T Bell
Labs and IBM Watson Research, and teaching experience from Cabrillo
College and variety of K-12 after-school and summer programs, such as
Stanford Upward Bound (a rigorous academic program for low income and
first generation college-bound high school students). In her classes
students will be able to learn a variety of skills including: web design,
HTML programming, computer animation and design, and computer programming.
The instructors
at the Children's Learning Museum Academy of Art and Technology strive
to provide a variety of art experiences through different art mediums.
The technology experiences with computers are not only scientific and
mathematical, but join physical art with computer art and design. In
addition to hosting classes in art and technology the instructors will
host a monthly Card making party open to the community for free. Children
and adults can come make cards or artwork to send to sick children and
adults in hospitals and convalescence homes. The Children's Learning
Museum will also have monthly Youth Art Exhibits. Once a month a K-12
school in Santa Cruz County will be chosen to have an art show at the
museum. The museum will display artwork created by the students in its
windows and on its walls. For the holiday season the museum will be
hosting work from a school in San Lorenzo Valley. For each show there
will be an opening reception for the students to invite their family
and friends.
The Children's
Learning Museum is excited to have started the Academy of Art and Technology
and cannot wait to get more of the community involved and introduce
art and computers to everyone.
